International Studies Glossary

Hi, my name is Nicole Haddad. I have been studying Sciences in College Ahuntsic for almost two years now. My field of study is International Studies. This glossary could be useful for those who are studying in the same field of study as me and also for the new students studying International Studies. Every word in this glossary is related to this field of study. Some of these words are unfamiliar to people who are not experts in International Studies. While reading those definitions that I found in the dictionary and on www.FieldRelated.com, people will understand and learn to like this field of study.

politics
noun
The complex or aggregate of relationships of people in society, esp. those relationships involving authority or power.
Example: Further, politics generates, modifies and dissolves accommodations through dispositions of power.

noun or adjective
The complex of human activities concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.
Example: The most important factor is the situation of the society, if the economy is wealthy and the food industry is developed, it is easy for people to obtain food.

socialism
noun
System or theory where each people are equal and live in community and there's no capitalism.
Example: However, on balance, vicarious liability is the best compromise as it finds the middle ground between individualism and socialism.

culture
noun
The total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action.
Example: Emo is a name given to a fashion culture in teenage boys and girls which involves wearing dark clothing, studs, black make-up and customizing old clothes.

All that is preserved or remembered of the past, esp. in written form.
Example: China has a long history of agricultural production.

noun
The beliefs, principles, practices, or programme of a Social Democratic Party or of social democrats.
Example: In Gidden's eyes this amounts to a distinctive and coherent philosophical framework that renews social democracy in an era in which capitalism is triumphant.

An advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.
Example: The society of the farm, just like the civilization of city life in Nineteen Eighty-Four, increasingly becomes an extension of people's mental life.

noun
The study of the natural features of the earth's surface, including topography, climate, soil, vegetation, etc.,
Example: The divergent nature of these allusions dislocate history and geography, adding to the reader's disorientation.

The quality or condition of being human; human nature.
Example: They observed unrest all over Europe, and thus became convinced of the revolutionary potential of the proletariat; a potential which would eventually carry humanity into the next stage of socialism.

naturalism
noun
The view of the world that takes account only of natural elements and forces, excluding the supernatural or spiritual.
Example: This question drives into further issues, such as formalistic or naturalistic approaches to law, but highlights the masculinity of positivism, naturalism and liberalism (societies division).

The act or an instance of communicating; the imparting or exchange of information, ideas, or feelings.
Example: This macabre, flippant resignation reveals an unsettling lack of communication between the sexes.

The doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
Example: Phyllis Trible defines feminism as "a critique of culture and faith in light of misogyny."

A country with low levels of well-being, as measurade by economic, social and technogical sophistication.
Example: In many developing nations, rapid population growth threatens the supply of food.

noun
Any form of money issued by a government or central bank and used as legal tender and a basis for trade.
Example: The funds are then layered and transformed by buying and selling currency, property or other assets domestically and abroad to disguise the audit trail.

The principal method of human communication, consisting of words used in a structured and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture.
Example: Face to face communication means that non verbal communication is also active, such as body language and facial expressions.
